An Ode to Deola

On today's runways and in fashion stores, we find that we've seen most things before and that few things strike us as "fresh" and "innovative". Deola Sagoe is one of those few designers that really offers striking innovative art. I'm so in love with her use of colors, choice of textiles and design sense. Unfortunately her clothes can only be considered modest with a lot of layering. Here's one piece that can be worn as a tunic and would look lovely with a loose flowing skirt or some pants.

So I'm back from Camp and not officially starting work until the Tuesday after Easter. I have a few more dresses finished that have gotten a tonne of compliments. They are the 3rd pieces in the Work Wear Collection and I'm extremely proud of them. I know you're all wondering when the photo shoot will happen. I dropped by the photography studio yesterday and I still am not happy with the prices they're charging. So until we reach some agreement, I'll keep working on the clothes and if at the end of the day they're not willing to compromise on the price, then you might be stuck with my photography :)

Salsa's Dress

My 12 year old sister wore this bright dress today and I couldn't resist taking a picture of it. It's long and goes all the way to her ankles but the top has a low neckline and very short sleeves so I'm only showing the bottom half. What do you think of the color? The fabric?

The Blouse Jilbab

So I took a picture of one of the latest pieces from my collection. My camera acted out so I didn't get to take enough pictures. Here's one that came out okay. I made this blouse jilbab for all the girls who want something that's a little fun and feminine but still completely modest. Right now it's available in fuchsia and brown. And it comes in two versions, with pockets and without. It's long and loose and has detail on the neck and the wrists. You'll get to see the whole dress soon!

New York Fashion Week: Adam

I'm not entirely sure why this designer has only one name but I love this outfit he put together. I think red is a difficult color to wear but this red jacket looks AMAZING with the cream colored mini dress. Surprisingly the red tights look good, but I'd wear this with brown work pants for a lovely New York fall/winter look. And I certainly wouldn't wear those velvet shoes.

New York Fashion Week: Academy of Art

I'm not entirely sure how I feel about this outfit. It seems partially drab, but at the same time I like the layering. It has a laid back-I don't care attitude which I dig. And I like the denim like color peeking through at the bottom and the light nice blue above it, what I don't like is the plaid-ish, white-blue color of the rest of the dress. The fingerless gloves are punkish and they match the black socks or tights. So all in all a mixed reaction for me but it's certainly an interesting outfit that covers and has personality.

Mara Hoffman's collection is all about prints and layers. Some of these prints don't look that great from afar but when you come up close, they're beautiful. I love how she layers some of the outfits and that nearly everything has long sleeves and goes past your butt lengthwise.

New York Fashion Week: Chado Ralph Rucci

These dresses by Chado Ralph Rucci are lovely. I have issues with both of them though. Before I saw the detail of the print on the left dress I was so excited and loved the big bold color amidst a black canvas. When I realized the detail was an image of a statue possibly a Buddha, I wasn't very happy. That being said, I like the cut of the dress and the idea of a large (preferably inanimate) print. It would work nicely with a cardigan or a bolero or some really long gloves and a pashmina.

The second dress looks like an abaya to me, although a little tighter than need be. And off course it's transparent. I actually like that about it because it gives you a chance to add your personality to the outfit. Add a vest, a sweater or t-shirt with a bright bold color inside and watch it pop through the mosaic.

I can't stop looking at this dress. I like it's color and that slight grecian feel it has. Most of all it excites me to see an outfit that's perfectly fashionably modest! All hijabis need to complete this look is a scarf and any kind will do. Although a silk or satin one would probably work best. The best part is you can pair this dress with different jackets to add color and texture to the dress.

When I think about beautiful elegant dresses that are wearable, I think Carolina Herrera. Her clothes have an old world glamour about them and seem to offer a certain confidence and elegance to the wearer. This outfit because of it's muted color is very wearable and the sweater makes it very comfortable and liveable. The bouncy skirt at the bottom adds a touch of romance and girlish femininity.

Sharah Collection is the brain child of Nazeela Rahman-Shaw. She's one of recently emerging muslim designers hijabifying the modern world of fashion. While I applaud her work, I'm not the biggest fan of Sharah Collection. I find most of their clothes to be matronly, but this two piece navy combo is out of this world! The scarf they use adds just the right amount of color so it's not completely monochromatic. Even the model looks like she's enjoying the outfit.

New York Fashion Week has a few Hijab friendly pieces that are cute. I like these dresses from Ana Sui. They're long with long sleeves and would work really well with long pants underneath. Even the neck has a high collar. They're Victorian inspired and have that lacy femininity. That being said, I'm sure the price tag will be what keeps you away.

This is such a lovely treat. I'm such a big fan of hoodies and think they instantly hijabify unruly tops. What makes this hoodie so cool is that it has been lengthened so that not only does it hijabify the top of your outfit, but it hijabifies the bottom. I'd love to see this hoody in different fabric and colors though because I'm not a big fan of wearing denim on top.

Nice and loose but gathered at the wrist so they don't slide off and get in your way.

The Devil is in the Embroidery

I chose this embroidered Abaya because of the colorful embroidery. It reminds me of all these colorful moroccan robes I've been seeing. Moroccans really love color and detail which is one of the things I love about this country! I wanted to just take pictures of everything so that I could create a color scrap book, but they've just joined the collage of colorful outfits in my mental scrap book. Sometimes I blink and I see a dress in amazing colors and textures and I know I haven't seen it before. So I wonder whether it's my subconscious creating outfits out of all the inspirational things I've seen over the years. For me fashion is about color and texture. I love color and that sensation you get from looking at a pink flower next to it's green stem, or a rich painting contrasting on a white wall. Everything about Morocco screams color. From the orange trees that line the pavements to the detailed islamic art etched into the ceilings and the myriad of colors in the furniture. I can't get enough of the art and color in the tagines and bowls, and lets not get started on clothes! lol even the food is colorful with all the veggies in a couscous. Okay maybe the Moroccan Tourism Board should hire me!

A Nigerian Wedding

I attended a Nigerian wedding yesterday. It would fall under the category of "platinum wedding" and I can't begin to imagine how much money they spent on it. There were so many events and it's still going on actually. My friend was there since tuesday and she told me of the many dinners and dances and while there yesterday, I attended two seperate events. In the afternoon there was a ladies luncheon with traditional musicians performing. There was some dancing and everyone got a goody bag with a towellete, a foil container with snacks, potpourri with a little perfume bottle and some napkins. The dinner was invitation only and since only my mom had gotten an invitation, I didn't expect to attend. But my aunt got me an invite. Not expecting to attend, I didnt have anything extra to wear, but luckily I had just collected a few more dresses from my collection before the trip so I wore the yellow sari dress. I'd gotten the fabric in dubai and I think of all the fabric I bought that one just might be the most striking and the most beautiful.

I know you're wondering where the pictures are at. I'm sorry I don't have any. I don't like travelling with my bulky camera and I don't have a click and shoot yet, sorry. But as soon as the bride gets her pics together, I'll post some.

The dinner was mixed although the guys were few and sat on one side while the ladies were everywhere else. There was a stage with two high chairs for the bride and groom. And there's a custom called "Ashobe" or "Ashoke" or "Anko" depending on where you're from and it's where all the brides friends and family wear the same clothes. I'm not a big fan as I love to see different colors and styles on people. But the color they chose a blue lace with yellow trim was beautiful and all the women had sewn theirs differently so there was enough variety. They then wore a "Gwaggoro" on their heads which is a very staticy and tough scarf that's shaped into a type of hat that you put on your head. It's what these ladies are wearing in the picture. Except the one people wore at the wedding was a goldish, yellowish, green.

They had goody bags at the second event as well, these ones had another hand made bag which was green with blue accents. And inside were pashmina scarves, ceramic plates, and ceramic perfume burners, tealights, and cups. Some people got cutting boards, others got little plastic baskets and others got huge hand weaved baskets with lids. I don't even remember some of the things. In the morning we got another goody bag this one was like the luis vuitton bag everyone has except white and blue. There was also a pashmina shawl and an under cap.

There was a Governer's wife and a Deputy Governer's wife in attendance from different states. I can only imagine what tonight's dinner (which I'm not attending) will be like. While the whole wedding has been a feast for the eyes, I'm glad that unlike my friend I didn't have to attend all the events. And glad that I'm not one of the family members during this week when they have to deal with all the guests and all the chaos that ensues during weddings. I wish the newly weds best of luck. But am more determined than ever to have a one day wedding!!

Kimono Simple

As most everyone knows, when it comes to clothes, bells and whistles don't impress me. I'm more a fan of fabric and color and texture. Other than that, I prefer simple and understated. As an opposite to the innocent Armine outfit, here's a slightly naughty Japanese Kimono. I really adore Kimono's though i've never owned one, or even worn one. I wonder about the bulk it has in the back, but adore the simplicity and combination of colors. What makes me like this one especially is the photograph. A red Kimono on a orange background and offcourse the expression on the model's face give it such a whimsical and slightly mischevious feel. Everyone feels a little naughty sometimes. I like the idea of this dress being the "Red Dress" the one that stands out but also covers up.

My biggest resolution for this year is to do more. I want to get better at html coding & css style sheets. I want to finish my collection and get it out there. I want to do more volunteer work. I want to inspire people this year and help them build their dreams. I want to get better at staying in touch, perhaps even go back to letter writing.

I already helped my mom this past week get started on her baking business. 3 more pieces from my collection are complete and I already have an order to make one custom piece. I have a few web design projects lined up. So already I'm on my way to completing my resolution to do more. What're some of your New Years Resolutions?

Setrms Goes Polka Dot Crazy

This year I've been really into polka dots. Whether it's tiny pink dots on a brown background, or big black dots on white, you name it, if it was dotted, I was besotted. As the year progressed, I think we all got fed up with the dots especially when they started showing up in all colors including puke green. Inspite of that, I got excited when I saw this polka dotted suit by Setrms. Monika Jufry Cuts it Right

Anyone who knows me, knows that I'm a big fan of citrus colors particularly lime green, tangerine orange and of course bright yellow! Which is why I adore this dress by Monika Jufry. I appreciate the simplicity in the design and the texture but ultimately, it's the color that really won me over. In Africa the Sun Always Shines!

I don't know if it's the bright color, or the model's smile, but I love this picture and love, love, love the outfit! It inspired me to get my act together and make a post today. This outfit is an African Buba though it's a little different from the ones I've posted before. Those had longer tops, this one's top is shorter and the embroidery work is different. Wear this on a day when you're feeling not so cheerful and it'll transform the way you feel. We all know how much of a difference the right outfit makes. This is one of those outfits that'll make you smile bigger, feel like you're on top of the world and like there's nothing you can't do.

Sorry I've been MIA for the past few days. I caught a bad cold and spent my days and nights in medicine enabled sleep and horrid bouts of coughing. Then got better and had to play catchup with work and before that was finished more work got thrown at me. Right now I'm sorting things out, and I can see glimpses of light at the end of the tunnel if it doesn't get covered by more work!

Korean Elegance

Although I'm not sure what Korean brides wear on their wedding day, their traditional clothes are so formal and elegant and would be appropriate. I think they wear the traditional Hanbok. I'm not sure if they have a particular color specific to brides or if any color goes. I just love this Hanbok as it looks very elegant, very modest and very rich.

Romanian Wedding Festival

I chose this Romanian wedding outfit, because I think it's pretty interesting how any culture you look into you find that in their past and history, modest dressing is the way it was. I love the detailed embroidery on their vests and once again it seems white is inescapable. Every so often, some designer goes back to the past and finds something like embroidery, vests, gypsy skirts, etc and reinvents them, making sure to make them shorter, tighter and more revealing! Luckily, 2008 will be remembered in fashion as the year that Modesty became Fashionable again.

A Turkish Affair

It's back to white! While Turks do wear traditional outfits, I had a tough time finding nice ones. Even Fashionably Modest white ones were hard to find. These two dresses are hijab friendly at least. I like the length and style of the sleeve. It's long and it covers without being a hindrance. I hate those long sleeves that fall into your bowl of soup. As for the full length wedding dress, you can't go wrong with it! I mean just look at how adorable the hijab and veil are.

Colorful Indian Brides

Thankfully India fully embraces color and has yet to embrace white. Their weddings are beautiful colorful affairs where the only danger is in there being too much color. Traditionally, Indian brides wear red, but I've seen different colors worn as well. I picked this bride because she is very modestly covered and looks like she's wearing a hijab. I chose the pink wedding dress because it isn't red and because of the design. I think of all the weddings I'd want to be invited to, I'd want to be invited to an Indian, Traditional Thai, and a Moroccan wedding because of the variety and richness of the colors they use. White wedding dresses are nice and all, but color just kicks it up a thousand notches!

It seems white really is a universal choice when it comes to weddings. When i think of Thai weddings, I think of golds, reds and really rich and luxurious colors, so i was quite surprised to find lots of white. And what I found really interesting was how in general the male outfit is a lot more modest than the female one.

I chose this picture because the couple is interracial and I believe that those weddings are the best because they do their part in decreasing racism, and increasing unity and harmony in the world. They celebrate the beauty in both their cultures and show that our similarities outweigh our differences.

An African Outfit

There are many countries in Africa, and as my friend Gina loves to say, Africa is a Continent! Because of that, I can't do justice to the myriad of African wedding dresses there are out there. This is just one type of outfit out of hundreds if not thousands. It's called a "Buba" and is worn predominantly in Nigeria by Yoruba women, although all Nigerian women wear it as well as women in other African Countries. Traditionally African brides wear really colorful clothes, but some do wear white. Here is a Buba in two colors. Would you wear this to a wedding? Out? To someone else's wedding?

A Maghrebi Dress Fit For a Bride

So the wedding is over, the guests have left, and we've cleaned and cleaned till we can't clean anymore. The house is starting to look like normal again, and we're starting to breath again. The groom is ready to fall down from exhaustion and is just worthy of pity. Hopefully when they get back from their honeymoon his batteries will be recharged.

I'll have pictures from the wedding, but before I shake off this exhaustion and look through the many pictures, I'll keep posting other weddings, brides, grooms, dresses, etc from around the world, so enjoy!

Here's a lovely Moroccan dress that's fit for a bride. It's regal, flowing and very colorful. It covers beautifully without looking stodgy. I just wouldn't recommend it for a June bride because the amount of fabric would certainly make you sweat a lot, but for a December wedding, I'd say this is perfect!

A Japanese Wedding

I found some really beautiful Japanese Wedding dresses online. I was fascinated by the hoods some of them wear, it could be worn as a hijab. I was surprised to find some brides in white, as I had assumed their wedding dresses would be bright and colorful. The one thing all the clothes had in common was how demure they made the bride look. And all the outfits were Modest and Fashionable. As a hijabi, you can't go wrong with any of them. I picked this wedding portrait, because the bride and groom look so cute and I love black and white pics!

I adore this simple black abaya for it's simplicity. Sure you might say that it's got some gold embroidery on it, but it's very understated just the way I like it! It has three gold circles on the bottom front, and one big one on the back. At 65 pounds, it's on the pricey end though, so I probably won't be buying one anytime soon.

Fashion in Morocco has certainly grown since I lived there as a teenager. I have always loved the use of colors and layering in their fashion. Armine has some of the best designs when it comes to Turkish silk scarves. But the best part about their site, is not just the scarves, but also the clothes their models wear and the styling. I'm not certain who dresses them, but their clothes look like they were designed by Turkish designer Tekbir Giyim. They certainly give you lovely ideas of how to tie a scarf.

Scarves come in all sorts of sizes and colors, but I must say my favorite scarves come from Turkey. Their scarves are available in every color and evoke all kinds of feelings. They have bright cheerful scarves, impressionist paintings, military themed ones, animal prints... and the list goes on. The best part of it all is that the scarves are made of silk which is very soft to touch and makes the colors stand out that much more. In NY I can usually spot a Hijabi's head who's wearing one of these above the crowd of NY citizens and I must say it makes me happy and I want to run to her and say Salam Sister! Do you often find that when you're in a predominantly Muslim country, you ignore Muslimahs you see but when you're in a secular or non Muslim country you're in love with your Muslim brethren and feel a kindred spirit and connection with them? Or is it just me?

All About the Embellishments

These two dresses have incredible detail and I can only imagine the number of hours it took to complete each one. In the end, the dresses turned out remarkable, but is all the embellishing actually necessary? Would you be happy with a dress with half those embellishments but just the same colors? Or do the embellishments make the dress?

The Best of Blue

These two designers sure know how to do blue right. The one on the left is a design by Amina al Jassim who also makes purses. It's a bedouin robe which to me is a much more interesting design than the typical Egyptian or Moroccan ones. It's a design confident in it's simplicity and very on point with it's embellishments.

Al Yashmac designed the dress on the right. It's a more elaborate design with layers and different fabrics and textures. I really like both these dresses, but if it came down to it, and I had to pick just one, I think I'd take Amina's design. Which of the two do you prefer?

Keeping with the International theme, today I picked Salwar Kameez native to Indians, Pakistanis and Bangladeshis. The beauty of Salwar Kameez is the seemingly infinitesimal versions you can find. Every color in the rainbow and then some, in every texture imaginable. In cottons, silks, polyesters etc. You'll find versions with detailed beading, some with gold or silver accents, and some that are very plain and simple with no frills. Here are some choices I picked out. The Sandy one I picked because I liked it's simplicity. The pink one for it's "Orientalness" it's very evocative of Japanese art. I've always admired Korean dresses because inspite of the simplicity and almost uniformity of the design, the textures and colors are incredibly rich and varied. Here's a beautiful white and orange Hanbok with a brown bow. The only problem with this dress is finding an occassion to wear it. A Quick Visit to Dubai

I went to Dubai on Oct 1st for a week. It was quite an experience. Never have I seen so much black that was fashionable without being over the top. I saw all kinds of Abaya's, with rhinestones, with shiny Japanese Silk, with beautiful embroidery, embellished zips, polka dots and bows. All of them Black, but beautiful and elegant. I was quite impressed and inspired by all the black. And I absolutely love the concept of an Abaya. It's quite simple to put an abaya on top of whatever you're wearing like a coat for a hot climate. I also love how dresses and skirts peek out under the abaya or down the front from about the knees down. That itself adds an artistic touch to everything.

Offcourse there was color in abundance in the stores. Lots of Indian Sari's and fabrics, as well as beautiful Moroccan inspired Jalabas with lots of details. Fashion is definitely alive in Dubai. I was a bit shocked to see Prom dresses and evening dresses exactly like ones in the US but I guess I shouldn't have been, knowing what arab women wear indoors behind closed doors. Still I felt with all their beautiful dresses why would they patronize those? Atleast I only saw about a handful of them.

Skirts were another thing that I went gaga over. I felt them too expensive otherwise I would have gone crazy. That plus my handluggage was already full. There were black satin silks in an ultra modern minimalist style, plus sleek silver ones, denim punk rock long skirts, lots of bohemian inspired earthy floral skirts as well as colorful ones. The main thing I noticed was that silks and satins and charmeuses seemed to rule the day. I certainly am not complaining those are my faves!

Another thing I discovered was the way the women wore their scarves or shayla. Overwhelmingly with their hair done high up in a bun. I found that helps give it shape so your head doesn't look flat. And the hair clips and pins with rhinestones and all sorts of designs to keep it put and add your own personal touch. I loved the fabric it's so light and transparent but long enough that you wrap it around enough times to be solid but it's still light enough that you won't sweat in it. I'd say the average price for one of those scarves is DHS35 but depending on the embellishments I've seen up to DHS200. The best part about shopping their is you get to haggle and bargain that part was great! I got quite a few bargains. My best purchase was the Bahraini style Abaya I think everyone should have one. It's almost like having wings. Its loose in the back but inside there's a string that you tighten that gives you a little definition in the front then the hands hang loose. I'll post a picture cos describing it is a little tricky.

I went to the Mall of the Emirates and The City Center Mall in Dubai among other places. The malls were spotless, smelled great (which gave my allergies a field day, I had a mild cold / sniffles the whole time I was there too much perfume everywhere!) and was very familiar. They had all the well known brands like Zara, H&M, Debenhams, MNG, Ralph Lauren, etc and other lesser known brands. But for me the exciting thing was seeing the Muslim design stores such as Ameerah, Habayeb and others. Habayeb and a store next to it had some really interesting Abayas, they were very nice but very expensive. One Abaya was DHS7000 at a rate of DHS3.6 = $1 you do the math!!. I saw Gucci Abayas and YSL ones as well as Chanel, but then in the end I couldn't make up my mind as to whether or not they were actually designed by those designers or not. For all I know someone could have just added their names with rhinestones just to add a designer touch to it. Does anyone know the truth of it? If they were actually designer abayas, there was nothing special about them at all.

I took way too many pictures but unfortunately I only got a camera after I finished visiting the malls so most of the pictures are just landscapes. But I'll post pics of some of the fabrics I got from there.

Inter Fashion Dialogue

I've heard of inter faith Dialogue but students at Virginia Commonwealth University are participating in inter Fashion Dialogue. Their assignment was to design Abaya's for Qatari students. They created all kinds including Punk Rock Abayas. I really wish they had pictures. I think more schools should include this kind of dialogue. Because by using things like fashion we can come to a better understanding of each other. By working on an abaya, the students will start looking at it as a piece of clothing and as an identity and thereby be forced to reexamine their stereotypical perception of what it means when someone wears one.

Be sure to check out Rabia Z. A fan favorite at Dubai Fashion Weeek. Although there's nothing that stands out in her collection for me, it's just nice that someone is creating a collection designed specifically for us. let me know what you think of her collection. Is it too mainstream? Do you think it's unique? What would you add to it or subtract from it?

I'm sorry I haven't posted anything for awhile. I'm travelling and am still out of the country. While I do have an internet connection, it's erratic and I'm having too much fun in the real world that I haven't spent much time on cyber space.

Design Inspiration

Today I watched Arabian Nights and I was fascinated by the clothes. Do you ever find that you see a certain outfit in a movie and feel transported to another time and place? Well it's been the second time within a 1 month span that I've been inspired by period pieces or costumes. The other two movies I was inspired by were Pride & Prejudice (the most recent one from 2006 I think) and Becoming Jane. the whole time I kept thinking those dresses are so modest they just need to add this here, reduce that there etc.

I'm so excited I got some new beautiful flowing fabric and started work on my dress collection. I can't wait to show you some, but I don't want to give it away too soon.

As I said before I like an abaya as much as the next person, but I also love color, patterns, florals, geometric & abstract shapes and varying textures. I'm evening starting to come around when it comes to embellishments and accents. My collection is for the Muslima who wishes to look modestly beautiful but most importantly she'll feel great! She'll feel comfortably covered yet adorable.

The New Hijab

I came across a post on Unique Muslimah about the New Hijab. She talks about how in cairo women cover their hair but then wear tight and revealing clothes. You can read the rest of the blog and comments here

One thing I found quite interesting is the word "mohtasheema" which means the one who is wearing a veil but wearing tight clothes. Quite an interesting distinction.

After reading the comments I started to wonder about what it's like in other countries. I know in Nigeria my biggest issue is the fact that women are practically forced by society to wear the huge prayer hijabs that go anywhere from below the waist to the ankles. I know there are a lot of sisters who'd say there's nothing wrong with that, they're properly covered etc etc but my biggest issue is that it's not really a matter of choice so much. Society expects you to wear that and if you don't, well people will automatically assume you're a certain type of person. My problem with that is that it takes away people's choice, and it makes me wonder how many women are wearing it because of Allah and how many just because they don't want to face the alternative? I think wearing hijab should be a personal choice and I think that as we get older we tend to look inwards a bit more and make choices like that because of our imaan. So while I disapprove of the sisters wearing tight clothes with hijab I understand that we all go through our inner struggles.

And perhaps it's better to be forced to wear hijab before you personally make that committment but I find it difficult to make that choice for myself when I feel it forced upon me. I feel rather conflicted about this topic.

What's With Attacks on Hijab?

What's with all the recent attacks on hijab and all the hijab bans popping up left and right? What happened to freedom of expression and of speech and of fashion? If some teenager decides to let his underwear show and his jeans hang off his butt, no one is up in an uproar, instead it's called a "trend" he's respected and admired amongst his peers for being bold, daring, and fashionable. Yet when a muslim woman wears a hijab which has been around since before Mary mother of Jesus, and even more recently worn by fashion icons like Grace Kelley and Audrey Hepburn, they're ridiculed, scorned and face sanctions.

It's bad enough that countries like France and Germany are banning Hijabs, but what about countries with muslim majorities like Turkey and Tunisia? If you can't wear a hijab in a muslim country without being afraid of being harassed, then where on God's good earth are you supposed to wear it?

Thankfully for sisters fortunate enough to be in America that freedom is protected by the constitution, subhanAllah my brothers and sisters we should be very afraid that in our own home countries people are making it difficult for our sisters to wear hijab. We owe it to ourselves to be aware of what's going on and to be truly thankful for our freedom to wear hijab.

Muslim Girl Magazine Review

So on Saturday I got my first Muslim Girl Magazine. I was so excited. Like everyone, I'd heard about the magazine and been to the website which is sadly lacking in information. I'd seen videos on Youtube and references on different sites so I wanted to see what the fuss was about. Most of the reviews I saw were bad, but offcourse always stubborn I wanted to make up my mind about it. So I subscribed and after I'd given up hope of ever seeing it, it showed up.

I must say I was very disappointed. It ended up being like a really fancy glossy catalog. The clothes & accesories they featured were really not that cute or original or interesting. And there was only 1 or perhaps 2 women wearing hijab in the whole magazine. Very few articles. The only feature I liked was that of muslim designers. I checked out their sites, but I already knew most of them anyway. The only other article I found informative was one about how Tunisia is banning the hijab in Universities and some public places. I was disappointed that they didn't have an interview with the cover girl and only had her "stats"

There seemed to be one too many pictures of girls in makeup and they just looked like random stock pictures that didn't always connect to the story.

I was really saddened by the magazine because I was really truly looking forward to having a Muslim Girl friendly magazine to read. Azizah and Al Jumuah are much better.

I think next I'll subscribe to Sisters magazine hopefully that'll be better. But I think it's geared to an older demographic?

Any other sisters subscribe to Muslim Girl? Did you like it? Or not? I know it's easy to criticize others when they're doing something that you can't or aren't doing, but I feel that this Magazine has labeled itself as a "Muslim" Magazine, so we should have a say in what we value and what we like or dislike about it. And perhaps they'll listen or perhaps someone else will listen and create a magazine for us.

I love this Ophelia strapless dress from Ann Taylor I love the way it drapes beautifully. As always I can't help but be frustrated by the fact that it's strapless and sleeveless. I really look forward to start working on my own clothing line. I'm very inspired by victorian and elizabethan era type clothing. I console myself with the fact that I can't even afford this dress anyway. But lets say it was a $40 dress I'd wear a white cardigan with it. and matching plain blue polyester scarf.

Crazy About Prints

Do prints drive you crazy in a good way or in a bad way? Sometimes I see geometric prints or florals that I absolutely love! At others I see those that resemble a rorshach (is that how you spell it?) test to me.

Ann Taylor mostly does prints well as does Old Navy
